One Of These Things Is Very Much Like The Other

I have a confession to make. I’ve been cheating on Taylor Hicks for the last several weeks. No, scratch that, cheating is the wrong word. Let’s call it expanding my horizons. Because it was, after all, Taylor and his love of all things musical who reminded me of the great stuff I’d once listened to that I set aside during my dark days a few years back. I think Taylor, of all people, would appreciate that I’ve found another artist who’s touched my soul in ways very few musicians have been able to.

I think a great deal of my draw to this new artist are the uncanny similarities between he and Taylor. Indulge me while I list a few of them here.

- They’re smart, both book and street-wise.

- Both are a little dorky, and don’t seem to mind letting that side of themselves show.

- They both gave up career paths that would allow them to live more comfortably in order to pursue their dream of making music their way.

- Both put in long years on stages in bars, often playing for crowds numbering in the single digits.

- Both gave themselves deadlines to “make it” in the business, and both kept pushing those deadlines forward.

- They both released self-produced, independent albums.

- Both are not only accomplished singers, but gifted songwriters and musicians.

- They both have had more than their fair share of family tragedies.

- Both are genuinely nice guys who care about making the world a better place.

- Both are extremely talented at taking songs we know and knocking them on their ear by changing up the arrangements and turning them into brand new songs.

- They are both comfortable stepping outside their chosen genres and trying something new.

- Both found themselves taking a path to success that neither ever expected.

- Both won by landslide victories.

And lastly, both are gifted with a rich, warm, and gravelly timbre to their voice that manages to snake past my defenses and curl up comfortably in a corner of my heart I reserve for a select few.

Just in case you’ve been living under a rock these past months and haven’t figured out who the other half of this equation is, allow me to introduce you to David Cook, winner of American Idol Season 7.

Right now, for me,  David is like a new pair of jeans. The kind that fit you like a glove and make your ass look magnificent. You yearn to pull them on and strut your stuff because you love how electric it makes you feel. But at the end of the day, when all is said and done, there’s nothing you crave more than slipping into your favorite pair of well-worn blue jeans, the ones that are slightly frayed and soft and warm as skin. Taylor is that pair of jeans.

Listening to David Cook sing makes me sit up straight and hold my breath, tremulous and taut.

Listening to Taylor Hicks sing turns my bones to jelly and makes me sigh with relief.

They’re not like oil and water, separate and incongruous, not at all. They are like earth and sky – allowing me solid ground to stand upon and the all the room I need to stretch.

A few nuggets of Cookie to nibble on.

  1. “They are like earth and sky – allowing me solid ground to stand upon and all the room I need to stretch.” I just had to quote this expressive simile (I guess b/c I’m a “word nerd,” too).

Wonder — I’m so glad that you were finally inspired to translate your thoughts into such an eerie reflection of my own feelings. Here’s to music sung & played from the heart — straight into our own hearts!!

  2. Don’t worry, I won’t tell. :D

  3. On a more serious note, I don’t think that’s cheating at all. It just shows that you understand, appreciate and recognize gifted artists. In the end, Taylor and David are both musicians with a lot to offer. However listeners respond, is just a matter of preference on their part.

  4. Thank you Wonder, your post is beautifully written and right on..
I agree that supporting David Cook is totally consistent with being faithful to Taylor and what he represents — a serious working musician, amazingly gifted and smart. I hope David gets to make the music that matters to him.

If you don’t mind, I’ll pass your words along, and share my own thoughts on the subject on a new blog sponsored by New England Soul Patrol:

  5. Feel free, Margaux. Thank you, I’m honored. :)

  6. Thank you Wonder for letting the muses talk to you as I said before im always blown away by your writeing

    Thanks

  7. Beautiful, expressive writing as usual, Wonder. It is always a pleasure and I look forward to each article.

David’s interpretations of those songs are what drew me in and made me a fan…..they bordered on brilliant.

Wonder, aren’t you glad you finally were curious enough to take a listen. Just look what you found !!

  8. Just wanted to add that another reason that I became a David Cook fan, beside the music, was the way he dealt with Simon’s hurtful criticisms. It was very reminiscent of Taylor’s “grace under fire”.

  9. “Indulge me while I list a few of them here.”

Well, this is one of my favorite things to do :)

You stated some of my jumbled thoughts and feelings in a thoughtful, organized and honest way. And also pointed out new ideas for me to think about as to why I was drawn to David Cook.

I love his voice, and interpretations of the songs, and his personality And it was a joy to watch David’s progession with American Idol, just like it was Taylor’s.

  10. Wow!!

David Cook followed by brilliant writing. I really like this guy. So I guess I am cheating too…

Not cheating though….just bringing the music back to music…..(this is the G-rated version of that quote..)

I hope they, TPTB, won’t screw him up…

  11. david may be like a new pair of jeans but read this book (http://www.booksonboard.com/index.php?BODY=viewbook&BOOK=138448) itll make you realize how soft and comfortable your old jeans were and how much you miss ‘em

  12. I don’t think for one minute you’re being unfaithful to Taylor Wonder and I’m positive Taylor would fully endorse his talent as an artist…..He’s certainly joined my list of loved musician’s. I’m eagerly awaiting his album release lets hope he has a huge amount of input into what’s on the album!
