What More Do You Want?

I’ve been giving a lot of thought to a couple specific issues regarding the Taylor Hicks fan base lately, but I’ve been hesitant to address them here before now. Each of us views Taylor and our place within his fan base differently, and that’s as it should be. So I don’t want anyone reading this to misinterpret my opinions to be what I believe the “party line” should be. I just feel the need to get some things off my chest. The catalyst of my decision to finally share these thoughts was a random post on a message board. The fan who wrote it and the board it was posted on will remain nameless. I have no desire to point fingers, but I found it interesting because her thoughts seemed to be mirrored by many other folks within the fan base, though all to a differing degree. In essence, she confessed that she was losing her enthusiasm and interest in all things Taylor. She pointed to his lack of consistent communication with the fans, as well as her doubts about his desire to move beyond small venues and the Southern club circuit, as the reasons for her growing lack of interest.

“Where is he?” she asked. “What is he doing? And why didn’t he introduce any new material towards the end of the summer tour? Where is his drive?”

For the sake of discussion, let’s call the emotions she expressed to be those of curiosity and anticipation. Fans who share her feelings often wonder why Taylor doesn’t do regular blogs on the HQ or release statements in a timely manner when the press picks up on something going on with him that they consider newsworthy. They are anxious to know what he’s doing, what kind of music he’s working on, what in-roads he’s making on his path to success.

I understand these emotions. I’ve experienced them myself. But I don’t expend any real energy on them. Because I realize on some deep level that it’s ultimately none of my business. The decisions about how Taylor chooses to direct his musical, artistic and creative career are his to make, not mine.

I know well enough from the music he’s been making since the release of In Your Time – and all that I’ve been lucky enough to hear since – that Taylor is the real deal. From the initial promise of Somehow to the magical, heartrending tags he inserted into The Maze on tour last year, his ability to continue to surprise and delight me is not in question. Not in my mind, anyway. He continues to be my personal pied-piper, my Shaman of Soul, and I’ll happily follow him wherever he chooses to take me.

It’s not up to me to decide how many CDs sold are enough, or whether his songs are being played on the radio, or if he’s reached millionaire status or not. I don’t care if he attends industry functions or networks behind the scenes with powerful folks or gets his name and face out there.

It’s not my place to declare when Taylor has reached a desired level of success. That call is his and his alone. He admitted early on in the American Idol process that he was just there in the hopes of getting some gigs. He’s spoken of being content if he could be guaranteed a couple hundred bucks a week. This is a man who simply wants to be able to make music his way and still be able to pay his bills. If, ultimately, he can do that by working a regional circuit of small clubs and theaters and playing to packed houses while occasionally cutting an album, who are we to tell him he’s not doing enough? Not enough for whom? Us or Taylor?

So that covers the anticipation part. Let’s talk about the curiosity factor for a minute.

I don’t need to hear from him on a regular or even semi-regular basis. Sure, the blogs he does are nice, like a postcard from an old friend, but they’re not necessary. I don’t need them to sustain my interest. And I don’t think we’re owed them, either. We’ve become so spoiled by the instant information available to us through the internet that we’ve begun to expect something we’ve really no right to.

Taylor shouldn’t be expected to check in with us. What gives us the right to demand he do so? He owes us nothing. That’s important, so I’m going to repeat it: He owes us nothing.

The most we have the right to expect is getting our money’s worth when we attend a show he’s doing or purchase an album of his. That’s it. And if he doesn’t deliver in a way that’s pleasing to us, we have the right to walk away and spend our money, time, and effort elsewhere. There is no contractual obligation on either of our parts. Both parties came into this venture freely and both are just as free to leave it.

That’s right, folks: Taylor has the right to fall off the face of the earth without telling us first. Or checking in with us while he’s there. So be grateful when he does, but don’t ever feel like he has to in order to make you happy. That’s your problem, not his.

It’s this devilish sense of entitlement to know that led to the creation and proliferation of what’s become known within the fan base as “the hate blogs.”

I’ll grant you that the entities behind these blogs are as far from being fans of Taylor’s as you can get, but the blame for them still being out there falls squarely into our collective laps. If we weren’t so damned curious about Taylor, we wouldn’t be tempted to peek in and read the latest, would we? Despite feeling the need to shower with a brillo pad afterwards, how many folks reading this can say in all honesty that they’ve never visited one of these hate blogs? I can’t. I’ve been there and done that and I hate myself a little each time I do it.

But it’s folks like me who keep the traffic on these sites high enough that the owners find ways to continue to weave their webs of hatred and contempt and pull us further in.

So what’s the solution? I haven’t a clue.

Perhaps the best thing we can do is put ourselves in Taylor’s shoes. Try to imagine what it might be like to suddenly have thousands of relative strangers demanding to know what we’re doing at any given moment. Imagine being second-guessed about the decisions concerning your career path, the way you spend your free time, or the intimate details of your love life. It would be rather oppressive, wouldn’t it? Not to mention down-right rude on the part of the questioner.

So why is it that Taylor deserves less of a right to privacy when it comes to living his life than we’ve come to expect in our own? Isn’t what he’s given us through the music enough?

If you can’t honestly answer that question in the affirmative, then perhaps it’s time for you to step away a bit. Take a look around at your life and concentrate as much energy on living it to the fullest as you do worrying about what Taylor is doing.

Or, to paraphrase something he once told Gray Charles, maybe you should go rake some fucking leaves.

Over and out …

I totaly remember when he said that too and I agree

  2. Wonder- love the writing and the content! I find myself guilty of some of these things, and I need to learn to BREATHE deep, and relax ~ I have always believed Taylor owes us nothing ~ he’s done so much for the fans already…..

Instant gratification breeds all sorts of feelings, in any of it’s forms, one of those being ‘ownership’ which leads to hate…

I will continue to enjoy Taylor, no matter what!

  3. Excellent points …

I want Taylor to be as successful as he wants to be and I will do whatever I can to help him realize that dream.

We grew very spoiled during Taylor’s AI run with the updates at GC. Should Taylor continue to update or blog?? Part of me says yes… during this “down” time take a minute or so once a week & pass on a hello. It is membership renewal time for me at HQ.. I will renew regardless but have to admit I do so also hoping that the communication will be there from time to time.

I would like to take a minute to comment on renewal of membership … regardless of what your experience was or wasn’t during this last year with HQ what message does it send if you do not renew? Just think about it … please.

As far as the hate blogs go … these are not fans… fans wish Taylor the best & do what they can to support him. These are small people looking for their 15 mins of fame by trashing a guy that never has an unkind word about anyone. I will never understand what makes people so hateful.

Google alerts have come fast & furious this week… I ask this.. Where were you people when it was time to promote a concert??? They could not be bothered then so I cannot be bothered now .. Remember clicking on those links gives them “hits” to count. They won’t be counting mine.

I have had a blast this last year & it all started because of Taylor Hicks. I am a fan .. not a fanatic .. just a fan.

    Excellent blog!

  4. I knew I forgot something :o )

Taylor has shown us time & time again that he is a very very smart young man. I trust him and cannot wait to see what he has in store for us next!

  5. Wonder… I love you more then words can say…. I have been having these same thoughts that you have so eloquently put on this page.

I have come to a sort of epiphany concerning this very same topic. One that touches on how Taylor can be one thing when it comes to the business end of the music, but he is someone that would NEVER compromise the music for anything and that is why we have grown to love and respect him as the person that he is….the consumate musician….

  6. Great blog, Wonder!

    “He owes us nothing.”

    Sums up everything perfectly.

  7. Loved that piece Wonder….Excellent blog I’m sure that Taylor will let us know whats happening soon. Until then I will continue to enjoy what he’s already given us……great music!

  8. Thank you Wonder for a fantastic blog. I’m sure Taylor has wondered on occasion just what in the hell he has gotten himself into. And even so, he has been more gracious and generous with his time than most in his position.

As for the ones who seem to have a mission fueled by some sort of vendetta against Taylor, their desire for the “truth” makes me laugh. If truth were so important, why hide behind an anonymous blog. Come out from behind the curtain and identify yourself/ves. Taylor owes you nothing indeed.

  9. Taylor Hicks does not belong to me.
Taylor Hicks does not belong to you.

Taylor Hicks is an adult man, who has every right to be fully in charge of his own destiny, both in relation to his career and his private life.

As invested in Taylor Hicks as some people like to believe they are, they have incurred no risk in the following of his career, and his personal life. The choices Taylor makes regarding his music and his personal life fundamentally affect his future, but don’t really affect his fans’ futures.

I like Taylor Hicks’ music . . . A LOT. I like the way he performs his music . . . A LOT. I like the way he presents himself in public . . . A LOT. I like the way he looks . . . A LOT. All these things make me smile and bring joy to my life. And so, I like to spend time with fun people who feel the same way I do, and share the unique experience of being a Taylor Hicks fan. It’s all about fun for me. I truly feel sorry for those who have forgotten about fun. Fun is good.

Taylor is on a journey towards the fulfillment of his own destiny. It is HIS destiny, not OUR destiny. Just like everyone of us, his journey has, and will continue to be a series of successes and failures. He is having what I like to call “a life.” I just wish some of his fans would go and get one.

  10. Bravo!

  11. Thank you, Wonder for saying what needed to be said and saying it so eloquently.

Sitting here listening to Maze tags, I know exactly what I want and expect from Taylor Hicks. I want him to continue making the music that affects me so deeply and gives me such pleasure that it is indescribable.

Being a “fan” is a new experience for me as I would expect having a large “fan base” as vocal, loyal and demanding as the Soul Patrol is to Taylor. He has chosen to adopt and nurture this group of fans as his own and as far as I can tell feels grateful to have them. So, in an effort to appease his fans, he has gone above and beyond what’s expected of an entertainer. This is a generous gift from Taylor but whether he continues to stay personally involved with his fans is up to him. I, for one, enjoy his messages but don’t expect or demand them. The only thing I hope that Taylor continues to do on some level are the M&Gs because I hope to someday look him in the eye and tell him how much his music has meant to me.

I respect any decision Taylor makes regarding keeping in touch with his fans or what venues he chooses to play. Whatever makes him comfortable, happy and able to concentrate on making music is what’s ultimately important to me.

I have chosen to be a Taylor Hicks fan. I hope that’s a benefit to Taylor but it gives me no special rights beyond enjoying his music and wanting the very best for him in all aspects of his personal life and career.

  12. Wonder, bravo!! Great job in expressing how you feel and how I think, many of Taylor’s fans feel as well, me included.

Regarding Taylor, the only measurement of success that matters to me, is what Taylor is happy and satified with, in his personal and professional life. That is all that counts.

  13. Thank you for putting
    some of my feelings
    into words Wonder.
I have them dark an light
    just like everyone else.
but I have to disagree on one front.
    The news front.

    …excellent post Soulaz
    I couldn’t agree more
but for me it’s more than fun

    color me editor
    BUT
    I want some
    NEWS!

    I could care less
    about his personal life
    or what he bought
    or who his accountant is..
    I just wanna know

    Got a gig?
    I wanna go.
    when’s the next CD?
    I wanna buy it.
    Got any appearances coming up?
    I wanna tune in.
    News,going on tour?
    I wanna spread the word.

    so sue me
for me to a certain extent
    it is about
    some news on Taylor’s progress
I like to share in that.

    Talent is great
    it goes a long way.
    Elusive is not so good.

    send me a nugget
    a morsal
    something.
    anything
    that isn’t the day after
    or
that isn’t a week old already
    is good.

    IMHO
Not everyone is loyal to the artist
    or to the music
    without being guided there.
    Every musician needs his fanbase
I see people fading away daily.
    You may disagree
but Taylor needs these fans too.

    It hurts me to know
he has lost some of that.
I don’t pay attention to the hate blogs
    I don’t think Taylor’s true fans do.

    although i was shocked
to see one person there last month
    I stay away.

    For me,
    watching Taylor
scratch his way to the top
    was as much joyful
    as it was painful.
    How could everyone not notice
    this mans talent?

    at any event
    For Taylor
    The stars aligned right
    the axis tilted
    an with hard work
an a lil help from his fans
    He got there.

    an well
I’d like to see him stay there.
    he deserves it.

    Feed the fanbase
    not too much
    but don’t starve em either.

    just my opinion…

    ok
    I’m good.
    I’m ducking for cover.

    just sayin

  14. Very well said and I think it needs to be said sometimes.
Let’s put Taylor first and not ourselves.

  15. Excellent article Wonderland….enjoyed it.
    thank you

  16. Great blog. You made some great points and some good reminders. Thanks!

  17. Wonderland, I follow quite a few of the message boards, post rarely if ever. I certainly feel the same way you do, but could never voice it quite so eloquently as you have. I enjoy Taylor’s voice, he’s easy on my eyes, and I hope he will be happy in his life. Period, that’s it. Thank you for writing what so many of us are thinking…

  18. “Isn’t what he’s given us through the music enough?”

That question gets right to the heart of the matter. Taylor’s early accessibility via the Internet and society’s fascination with celebrity have created a false sense of entitlement for many. Coming back to this question is a good way for me to hold up the mirror to my own expectations when my “curiousity” runs amok.

A wise person once told me that his music “…..is all we’re permitted, so we might as well dive into it head first”. For some reason this concept of “permission” really appealed to me.

Thanks as always for searching for and finding just the right question(s) to ask of ourselves.

  19. Wonder – who said you could read my thoughts? I have been saying this for some time now, although not as well as you have written here.

I know Taylor loves his fans and has showed that in so many ways I have lost count. He is just a man that has a dream and he has the right to chase HIS drea, not the one that others (including his fans) want for him and themselves.

I for one will be excited to see him anywhere he plays that I can get to. I will buy his CDs until the day I die. I will continue to introduce others to his magic. I will continue to antisipate his next creative move. He has opened the door to music again for me and I thank him everyday for that gift.

And he doesn’t even have to tell me his plans, I’ll just be there. Hell, we’re just along for the ride, but it’s Taylor’s ride, not ours.

I also think there are many fans who feel this same way. I’ve talked to many myself.

Well said again, Wonder. I hope this does some good or at least helps to calm the waters.

  20. THANKS SOUL

I BELIVE THIS 100 % PERCENT AND IT REALY IS ALL ABOUT THE MUSIC AND THE OTHERS WHO LIKE THE MUSIC TOO

  21. Wonder, I so love to read your words because so often they reflect my own beliefs.

“He owes us nothing” So simply and succinctly put.

If anything it’s us that owe him. We owe him the respect that we would pay to any other human being. He opens his soul and pours out his heart to us again and again and again, and we just keep saying “more, more, more”. We need to be satisfied with what he’s willing to share and the way he chooses to share it…. in his music. Ahhh yes. The music. It feeds me as I know it feeds all of us. This is where you can find Taylor. In the music.

As far as his career goes, it’s all about trust man. That’s it. Trust. He has proven time and time again that he knows what he’s doing. As much as I’d like to believe that I know what’s best for him, it has become obvious that I know “nothink” (LOL)..

So, I’ll continue to listen and trust. Probably a good thing for us all to do.

  22. Well, I agree Taylor owes us nothing. BUT I think it would help his career if he would blog or shout out or something a little more often. Fans are like schools of fish throw out little tidbits of what they like and they will follow you anywhere. STOP feeding and they will wander off. John Mayer is a very good example of staying on touch with fans.
It wouldn’t take much. Stories from the tour bus, comments about the overseas trips anything. What he had for breakfast, LOL. This would keep the crazies at bay and the fans that don’t care one way or the other, Well wouldn’t they be over- joyed to hear from Taylor. Seems to me it would be a win win situation with very little effort.

Sonny, I do agree with what you’ve said here. I want to know these things, too. But there’s a line that seems to grow very blurry when we talk about what we’re entitled to know as fans.

Should we be informed of tour dates, appearances and CD releases? Absolutely! Do we have the right to expect anything beyond that? I don’t think we do.

As I said, I enjoy the blogs he does just as much the next fan. I like reading, hearing or watching interviews with him when they’re conducted by folks who’ve taken their time to do their homework. But I look at these things as “just because” gifts from Taylor and not something that should become a “just because I have to,” instead.

  24. Very apropos, in this time & space especially, Wonder. Well said!

It’s always fun to hear from or about Taylor, as long as he’s comfortable with it. Like anything else, expectations that are too high easily lead to disappointment. I’m in it for his music, anything else is a bonus round.

  25. Dee wrote:

    Ray Charles
    Otis Redding
    Joe Cocker
    Van Morrison
    Bob Seger

These are just a few of the artists who have or are still enjoying long and successful careers without ever having felt the need to provide their fans with blogs or shout-outs. Have we forgotten the the not-so-distant past when the only time we heard from our favorite performer is when they went on tour or released an album? Where is this sense of entitlement coming from?

And did you ever stop to consider that perhaps Taylor is satisfied with his career as it stands today? Maybe he doesn’t feel it needs any help. Have we the right to tell him differently?

“Fans are like schools of fish throw out little tidbits of what they like and they will follow you anywhere. STOP feeding and they will wander off. ”

I couldn’t disagree more. And I would go so far as to say that the folks who do wander off were never really fans to begin with.

“It wouldn’t take much. Stories from the tour bus, comments about the overseas trips anything. What he had for breakfast, LOL. See, I’m afraid it’s these little tidbits that, rather than keeping the “crazies’ at bay, draw them ever closer.

  26. Wonder,
Bravo for saying a lot of things that needed to be said and doing it so eloquently.

    Twinner,
I also liked what you said about respect for Taylor as a human being. There have been times when have wondered if he isn’t more of a “character” to some than a real flesh and blood person.

Of course I am curious about Taylor’s next album and who will be involved and what studio he will use, etc., but I’m far from impatient.

The biggest gift we could give Taylor is to put our own personal wants/needs on the back burner for a while and give him the time and space he needs to work on this very important next step in his career.

Since he has all the puzzle pieces and I don’t – I’m perfectly content to just trust Taylor and enjoy the ride.

Posted this recently on another site.

I’m pretty much of the mind I’m going to keep a batch of Red Snappers in the fridge, – stack up a pile of great blues and soul music with a lot of Taylor’s songs in the mix, – and sit back at watch this fascinating little play continue to evolve.

I figure we’re just coming off intermission and starting Act III

  27. Wonder: AMEN!! I can’t disagree with anything you wrote…this is a great and timely post.

  28. You’re right,Taylor don’t owe us anything.Personally,I feel like I owe him so much for bringing so much happiness into my life. What we all need to remember is Taylor is just one man.He can’t possibly be all things to all people all the time.

  29. Taylor has given fans more than nearly any artist I know, both of himself onstage and off. I think this has many of us spoiled :) No one has the right to demand anything more of him, yet some feel they do. Those who are disappointed may be bitter, may post on hate blogs. But Taylor owes his life to himself first and nothing to us, except to give his fans good music and a good show. And he does that very well. I think he does need to stay in touch with his fanbase, but that doesn’t mean personally to each one. What he does is OK by me.

  30. Wonderland, you have a right to your opinion. Those old artists when they were starting out didn’t have the internet or the tools that the new hip artists have now. When you can reach so many with so little effort, why not take advantage of it? The feeling of connection to an artist can be enhanced by the internet especially when the artist is in writing mode with a new CD and not touring. Fans get out of the habit of checking on artists when things are slow so that’s the perfect time for the artist to reach out to his fans. It just seems like good business when you are trying to build and expand your fan base. He has said that is what he is interested in doing, building his fan base. He is such a hands on guy I would think he would be interested in this simple and effective tool of PR and use it more often. I don’t mean this as a slam to Taylor I’m just stating a very objective business opinion.
It’s a whole new world out there from when the old school guys were trying to make it.

  31. Great thoughts…great blog! Taylor does not owe us doodley-squat. I am so glad that someone finally laid it out on the line. So many fans do not want to imagine that Taylor has a life outside of them. Taylor is a man…and it appears he has normal needs…but, to hear some comments from time to time that refuse to believe that he does want what most people want…companionship and relationships…possibly love. I agree that those that are upset about any facet of his life outside of fandom…need to backoff…if they can not enjoy his desires, his choices and his style. He is gonna do it his way…no matter what…just that kinda guy, IMO.

  32. Oh, puh-leese. Taylor asked for our support and we’ve made him a millionaire. Am I the only one who remembers that our votes, which he asked us for, gave him his initial chance, and we were asked to buy albums on Amazon or not on Amazon at specific times to help him out? He told us he would keep Graycharles going and then, no explanation from him, it went down–what a pity, it might have been the greatest marketing tool he had. He performs just as he enjoys performing–he doesn’t give us “his all” as some act of self-sacrifice. We are his customers. If he is wise, he will keep us happy. I have customers too, I make a big effort to keep them satisfied not as self-sacrifice but because they pay the bills and ultimately I need them as much or more than they do me. I hope Taylor maintains a good enough career to keep touring nationally–love his concerts but wouldn’t travel to Birmingham too often to see him. Enough of the “poor Taylor” stuff. I wish him well. He is talented. Others maybe as talented will sing in bars their whole lives. He is lucky as can be.

You make some interesting points, which bring to my mind the very nature of Taylor’s relationship with his fans. I do believe there are some who think it is of a personal nature to some degree, but it truly is a business relationship at the end of the day. Making music is a business which touches our hearts and souls, but it still is a business. Taylor, and men and women engaged in the business of making music, need loyal fans to support their business. I get that . . . truly I do.

However, I think the point of Wonder’s blog is not to belittle the business aspect of our relationship with Taylor, but to question those who need the business relationship to become a personal relationship.

I have customers at work too. Everybody who works anywhere has customers that they seek to please. But, if one of my customers demanded to know intimate details of my private life in order to buy the widget I was selling, I would politely decline their business.

  34. If he is wise, he will keep us happy. I agree that we are the customers and Taylor needs to keep us happy to be successful. However, the point is that he need only perform and do what he does best to keep me happy and going to concerts and buying cds. He does not have to send me personal messages or give me intimate details of his life to accomplish that. I think he needs better PR to get the “news” out to his fans but he doesn’t have to be the messenger.

I have never read that he is going to stop touring but if I had to go to Birmingham to see him; I would do it.

I’m sorry, but what’s the point you’re trying to make? Yes, Taylor asked for our support and many of us gave it willingly. I don’t remember him ever promising anything in return for our support, though I think many would consider the gift of his music more than fair compensation.

“He told us he would keep Graycharles going and then, no explanation from him, it went down–what a pity, it might have been the greatest marketing tool he had.”

The decision to keep GC going was not Taylor’s to make, it was Gray’s, and he chose to shut it down. Taylor fully expected the blog to remain up and running, but when his team and Gray were unable to reach what Gray considered an equitable agreement, GC called it quits. It’s not fair to point fingers at Taylor for what happened there.

As for the remainder of your comment, I think Soulaz and SoulForever have covered that territory very well, except for one small thing: “poor Taylor.”

Would you please point out which of the comments here contain those words, or give that impression? I don’t think anyone here feels sorry for Taylor. There is concern for him, perhaps, but certainly not pity.

I have customers at work too. Everybody who works anywhere has customers that they seek to please. But, if one of my customers demanded to know intimate details of my private life in order to buy the widget I was selling, I would politely decline their business.”

Exactly the point that Wonder was trying to make. None of us want to tell anyone else what to do or what to feel. We fans who agree with this point of view, want to collectively, make others understand that there is a line that is very easily blurred and therefore can easily be crossed.

Am I the only one who remembers that our votes, which he asked us for, gave him his initial chance, and we were asked to buy albums on Amazon or not on Amazon at specific times to help him out? He told us he would keep Graycharles going and then, no explanation from him, it went down–what a pity, it might have been the greatest marketing tool he had.”

I beg to differ with you here. I can honestly say that at no time was I ever convinced or coaxed by anyone to purchase a CD when I did not choose to. I hardly ever even went to Gray Charles and I can safely assume that a good majority of Taylor’s fans did not spend their days drinking the Gray Charles kool-aid that you speak about.

You chose to follow the directive and to believe the words that that were filtered through the blogs and message boards. You chose to vote a bazillion times because Taylor asked you to. I did none of these things and I again can safely suppose that a good portion of his fans would fall into the same category as I do.

I never voted for Taylor because he asked me and I pity anyone that felt that they needed to. I voted for Taylor strictly because I felt that he deserved the chance to be heard. The chance that was unfairly denied him because he did not fit into any preconceived category that the music business likes to make us think we want to hear.

I feel sorry for you people that feel that they deserve anything more for their votes or their dedication, then just amazing music. This is exactly the point that is trying to be made here.

  37. Truth of the matter is, that Taylor owes nobody anything more than the show we pay for.

Sadly, Taylor has been ridiculously damaged by the organized nature of many of his psychotic fanbase that feel they own him or he owes them.

I pray wherever he goes in life he won’t always be haunted by that- just as Clay is.

  38. Bravo Wonder…..beautifully said. Taylor owes us nothing more than a good show and his shows have been fantastic. It would be wonderful if he gets to have the creative freedom he seeks for his next cd…I am sure he is doing his best to accomplish that. I for one would travel anywhere in this country to see him in concert….he and his music bring me that much joy.

  39. After carefully reading this blog entry again. I wanted to come back and say that, Wonder, I couldn’t agree with you more.

I’m as guilty for reading the ‘hate blogs’ as the next person. I admit that I have lost total interest in them, but for awhile, I read them daily. Why? I’m really not sure.

But, when does it end? When is enough-enough?

For some reason, it seems that not only Taylor fans, but, Taylor himself are always having to live the hard knock life. Always having to live with our hackles up and never for one minute can we or he put our guard down.

He has done everything in his power to appease
the crying baby known as the ‘Soul Patrol’ and none of it is ever good enough.

Back in the halcyon days of Gray Charles- We got sneak listens to Taylor’s CD. We got sneak peaks at photo shoot pictures. For God sakes, the guy even let us know when he was in an allergist’s office.

In my opinion, Taylor has gone above and beyond to keep his fans in the loop of everything going on with him.

Now, he is on hiatus and deserves privacy and time to reflect on what has happened to him over the course of 24 short months.

What must it be like to go from being picked out of obscurity-to the darling of a reality show- to finally finding someone to spend time with, and having ‘fans’ turn on you?

The pressure has to be tremendous and it’s not fair to ask someone live up to expectations that aren’t feasable for any human being.

  40. HarpNSoul…

LOL…you crack me up…but, you are right. The fans that think that Taylor does not deserve that R & R are just slave drivers…and they also don’t want him to have a relationship…and too bad…he is…and he will. So, everyone with their feelings hurt cause they are thinking they have a personal relationship with Taylor…need to face reality. He is taken.

  41. Thanks for the excellent blog, Wonder.
I have to admit that the more I think about this the more I think “Why the Heck am I thinking about this so much??!!”
    Heh.
One thing I have never thought is that Taylor owes me anything.
I confess I miss the ‘rush’ of the almost daily news tidbits and appearances and at times I feel a little like a shaky addict in search of the next “hit”.
But I never blame the drug for my addiction.

Now I yearn for a note or two of new music and satisfy the yen by discovering yet another video I haven’t seen while revisiting old favorites on CD.

    I can wait.

  42. While I appreciate all the comments and the conversations going on here, I’d prefer there be no discussion of the specifics of Taylor’s personal life. Instead, let’s keep the focus on the larger issues raised in my original blog.

It is possible to have a dialogue about the sense of entitlement that allowed the hate blogs to flourish without discussing what’s talked about on them. We’re not going to rehash that here. This is my home and I don’t need the bad karma.

    Thanks!

  43. Wonder, you are soooo right! This sense of entitlement that “I should know about Taylor on a daily basis” is really beyond me. Sure, I miss the guy (though, not too much… yet. :D ) and the excitement of hearing about his appearances and shows.

Granted, he’s where he is right now because you all helped him, but it was done voluntarily. He asked, pleaded even, for help and you all responded willingly. I’m sure he’s forever grateful for what you all did for him but until when will he be asked for a payback? And why in the world would he be asked for a payback? He’s giving what he’s got on his shows. We are informed of his upcoming performances, even if the news come in late… sometimes. What else do we need to know?

And about expectations. One thing I don’t do is to put an artist like Taylor, on pedestal enclosed in a glass and expect him to stay there. Artists are the most dynamic, stubborn, complicated and difficult of people. The moment you box them in, it’s either you’re going to be angry and frustrated, or them dead. Though sometimes I’m guilty of being interested about the innergoings of his career, I really don’t care about his personal life and how he handles it. I don’t even ask my friends about their personal lives until they talk first, what more about this person who doesn’t know I exist?

  44. Wonder, thank you.
I agree with you whole heartily that Taylor owes us nothing!
We all signed on under our own free will.

We are members of his Soul Patrol … but that does not make him ours!
We do not have the right to publicly tell him how to run his career or to delve into his personal live.
I am appalled at some of the things I have seen talked about across the net … how would they feel if they knew Taylor had just read what they had posted on the worldwide web. Would they be able to look him in the eye?

What we do have is a community of individuals who came together because we share a common bond, the experience of how Taylor’s music makes us feel!

We’ve learned the reason why his music touches us so personally.
It is the heart of the man behind the music, and his ability to sing from his soul.
It is why his music touches us so deeply.

It is a feeling like none I have ever experienced before and I don’t ever want it to go away.
It is why I will support Taylor in any way possible, and will willingly follow whatever path his music takes.

In a recent blog post (Since The Day I Was Born), I referred to Simon’s question to
Taylor during his AI audition …
“Why are you here?” and Taylor’s answer … “because I want my voice heard.”
It is a question that all need to ask themselves … “Why are you here?”

Thank you again Wonder, this is a topic that I have addressed on many occasions, kudos to you and your readers.
The majority are what I refer to as Taylor ’supporters’ as opposed to ‘fans’.
    There is a difference!

  45. I was part of the AI message board where Taylor’s fans were christened the “Soul Patrol” to which Taylor gave an exuberant shout out each week.

We organized and along with millions of other non-message board voters; gave Taylor his AI win. And, yes I voted what seemed like a bazillion times because I wanted Taylor to win. I had not voted for anything or anyone before Taylor and I haven’t voted since. Why did I vote so many times ….because I thought his talent was extraordinary; I liked everything about him and really thought he deserved to win.

Did I expect anything in return? A payoff of some sort? A personal performance? A song dedicated to me on his first CD? The answer is, NO….I expected nothing…..nor, do I now. If fans are expecting something that they’re not getting…where does that expectation come from? Is it because Taylor was so grateful to his fans that he began to personalize the relationship between himself and them? I have no answers to explain “some” dissatisfaction; but I do know this…….Taylor owes us nothing!

And, even if I had expected payment for my AI votes and support; I would now gladly mark the debt “paid in full” because Taylor has spent two years of his life expressing his gratitude and giving himself to his fans.

Please, everyone…..mark Taylor’s debt: “Paid in Full” and let him get on with his life making music and enjoying his personal space.

  46. Wonder- thanks for the great blog.
    And Twinner- I especially loved:
“If anything it’s us that owe him. In the music”

I think thats where some of us get gummed up. When it becomes about us, and our wants/needs, as if he does owe us something. Like you said, he owes us nothing. We’ve all seen it or been guilty of it ourselves at times. But it is good to read this and take a step back to see if we can see it in ourselves.

  47. TayBea said it succinctly, ” Let’s put Taylor first and not ourselves.”.

This statement capsulizes how we should all be thinking and behaving. Kudos TayBea.

  48. Wonder, as always I love the way you think and how you translate those thoughts into the written word.
I am indebted to Taylor, not the other way around. His voice pulled me away from a very dark place in my life and back into the living. I have enjoyed his voice, his music, and many of his fans whom I now call friends. The joy I have felt planning when and where and who I will hang out with at a Taylor Hicks concert has been enormous, and has me living my life on a much larger scale.
I have had to accept the fact that there are those who do not like Taylor, his way with a song or the movements of his dance, and some who write inflamatory statements just to entice the more rabid sp fans to come out swinging (often with misspelled words, autrocious gramar, and with little or no thought before printing their knee jerk reactions). And I also have had to realize that there are fans who believe that Taylor “belongs” to them, that they should be in his inner circle of friends just because they have so overly invested themselves in who they perceive him to.
Taylor is a gift that I am still unwrapping. With each layer unwrapped I ohh, and I ahh, and I woooo! I want him to have the time, space, and privacy to commune with the muses, scratch what itches and come back with more of his gifts for me to enjoy.

    Bravo, Legacy !

  50. IMHO, I think the internet and today’s instant gratification for information have completely changed “fan” bases industry-wide. Not just the music industry but the whole “celebrity” industry. I don’t believe that all the negativity is just in Taylor Hicks’ corner. If you look and you want to find it you will find it on any celebrity of whom you choose to be a fan.
Just the same that you have a choice to be a fan or not one also has the choice of what type of fan you want to be. Ignore the negativity and keep on promoting the positive.
IMHO, simply acknowledging the negative information out there is promoting the negative. Don’t give them the satisfaction.

  51. Wonder,

I have come here this morning to read your latest blog entries. As I have said before, I LOVE IT WHEN YOU WRITE AND SHARE YOUR WRITINGS WITH US !!

But I am sad that you are troubled. Hopefully you have lightened your heart and soul by writing your feelings here.

How can something like this which has brought us pleasure beyond measure, also bring us “down” from time to time? I am not a very decisive person. I am easily swayed one way or the other. I tend to agonize over the simplest things sometimes. But at the end of the day, I have to rely on my “gut” feeling and set the conflicting voices aside. I can listen to them, and draw from them – but at some point a “gut” feeling emerges. I have trained myself to do this out of necessity for my own sanity. Sometimes I’m wrong, but I usually formulate some semblance of right out of the excruciating process, at least for me. Therein I find peace.

So, at the end of this day, I hold my head up high as a Taylor Hicks fan. It’s almost impossible to avoid the negative that is out there. Good vibes are out there too. I will gather what I need from both and ignore the rest.

Is Taylor a perfect human being? Do I need him to be? No and No. As I hope no one expects me to be.

My “gut” feeling is that he is grateful and kind and sincere, appreciates us, and loves what he is doing. That is all I need to know. Until his voice and actions cause me to feel otherwise, I choose to stay right where I am – an ardent follower of his career and lover of his music. I will wait for him to bring both to me in his own time.

What is it about his music that is so magnetic?
Why do I listen to it SO much more than the other music that I also love? I’ll have to think about that one.

Wonder – Please continue to share your heart with us. Taylor is extremely fortunate to have you as his friend. We all are.

  52. Wonder – I can only say “amen.”

  53. I have felt exactly like a ping-pong ball these last few weeks. Thanks for clarifying things for me brilliantly!
